Rats chew through more than $20,000 of cash at Indian ATM

A bank in India has been hit by thieves, but the tiny robbers weren’t interested in spending the cash.

Rather, they were keen on eating it.

A bunch of cheeky rats have been named as the culprits behind a loss of almost $23,000 in cash, chewing through the money after getting into an ATM.

As we learned from a story from The Indian Express, the machine had stopped working, conking out back in mid-May.

When the ATM technicians finally opened up the machine to check things out, they discovered piles of 500 and 2,000 rupee notes that had been chewed into confetti.

Vision posted to Twitter by local news anchor Nandan Pratim Sharma Bordoloi shows the cash was cactus after the rodents got to it.

The bank was able to salvage roughly $33,000, but the remaining cash was unusable.

According to a yarn from local journo Sadiq Naqvi for The Hindustan Times, the sneaky little critters got in through a hole meant for wires.

But even though the body of one of the tiny, tiny criminals was found in the machine, the police still investigated.

Despite what would have been a foul smell, a spokesperson from Sijuguri police station ruled out any foul play.

“We have not found the involvement of any bank official or any outsider,” they said.
