Bizarre feature at the centre of stunning lake home renovation

If you've never heard of One Of A Kind but love unique home renovations, then this may just be the show for you, and you can stream it for free on 9Now.

In each episode of the series' interior designer Grace Mitchell embraces quirky designs as she completely transforms a house, often drawing inspiration from the lives of those who live in it to add unique talking points while maintaining style.

And when Grace took on the project of redesigning Ruth and Bryson Nokes' 1960s lakeside home, it was no exception. After hearing the families' stories — and in particular that they love being on the water and how Bryson was gifted a canoe from graduating — Grace decided to use the information as inspiration for the home in a unique way, by installing a $3,000 canoe onto the ceiling.

It was completed with light fittings to make it a key feature in the space, while also serving a practical purpose.

The canoe also had a another use in the home. Grace had the family partake in a photo shoot that utilised the canoe, noting that Ruth, a photographer, has rarely had her own photo taken.

The picture was then transformed into a giant mural that framed the fireplace within the open space.

And the canoe wasn't the only quirky feature that Grace added into the home. After hearing that Ruth and Bryson met playing basketball, Grace ordered the flooring of an old indoor basketball court to use as the kitchen splashback, pairing it with blue-grey cabinetry.

Other key features added included a cathedral ceiling, whereby the old roof was completely torn down and reframed in order to make it happen.

"I think it makes it feel way bigger, and I think it adds some much needed architectural interest to the house," Grace explained.

Grace also decided to paint the entire exterior of the home black in order to help it "nestle into its surroundings", while having bi-fold doors leading out into the back which enabled the space completely open up.

When the reveal took place it's safe to say Ruth and Bryson were in awe of the renovation.

"That's just the coolest thing ever," Bryson noted of the canoe. "I bet was fun trying to hang that," he added.

"Oh it was super easy, just ask the guys," Grace joked, before later explaining her vision for the home.

"I know that Ruth and Bryson are really excited about entertaining in their new house and having a lot of people over, and that's kind of their thing.

"So we built in a lot of small talk areas for people to come in and ask, 'Oh my goodness there's a canoe on your ceiling? How did that happen?' Or, 'There's a huge mural'. There's a lot of opportunities for them to share who they are and what is unique about them," she said.
