Kelpie takes unlucky tumble during fox chase
An overenthusiastic kelpie hopefully learned a valuable hunting lesson and will paws for thought in future after plunging down a 12m deep disused mining shaft.
Gigi the 16-month-old red kelpie was chasing a fox when she tumbled down the hole on Nuggety Gully Road in Creswick, north of Ballarat in Victoria.
It could easily have been no laughing matter - the deep shaft was filled with "a lot of corrugated iron, old poles and posts" according to Country Fire Authority officer Darren Roper.

But luckily, Gigi broke no bones and was lifted out by the fire crews, very happy to see her family.
She was rushed to the vet for a 15cm gash she sustained in her right rear leg, but the operation went well and she's now recovering.
"She'll live to chase another fox," Mr Roper said.
