Meet Max, a fitness model trying to find love with prisoner Tara on Love During Lockup

In the tumultuous world of Love During Lockup, relationships are anything but a conventional love story.

The series follows the real-life stories of couples who are separated by incarceration as they navigate their relationships from either side of prison.

During a Season 1 episode – which you can watch for free on 9Now – viewers follow fitness model Max's quest to find love with prisoner Tara.

At the time of filming, Max, 24, said he wanted a relationship with "someone that is open-minded, good looking, very loyal – a ride or die type".

He said that "because I've been cheated on in the past" he liked the idea of knowing where his partner would be.

Max was hopeful he'd found that with inmate Tara who he had been exchanging letters with consistently for four months.

Tara, 37, had been incarcerated for possession of narcotics and opiates.

"The main thing I like about Tara is her communication," Max said.

"Based off her messages, Tara does seem like somebody I could potentially fall in love with one day."

Max and Tara had also spent lots of time talking over the phone, but in this episode of Love During Lockup, the pair were ready to take a big step in their relationship – meeting face-to-face over video call.

Max was still gauging his attraction to Tara considering he hadn't seen any pictures of her before her incarceration.

"Tara is very good looking but I don't know what she looks like now," Max said.

"Her photos before prison were very good but her mug shots, not terrible but of course no body looks fantastic in her mug shot."

"I really need to see what she looks like now."

Max waited anxiously as he prepared for Tara to join the video call.

But as more than 20 minutes passed he realised that he'd been stood up.

"What's going on? I haven't heard anything and we already agreed to speak?"
