Lightning illuminates Las Vegas skyline as wild weather lashes Sin City

Las Vegas lit up over the weekend when a powerful storm swept through the city.

Stunning lightning strikes illuminated the iconic skyline above the glitter strip, creating quite a spectacle for those watching from afar.

The National Weather Service described the storm as a “monsoonal severe weather” event, recording around 230 lightning cloud-to-ground strikes.

And while it made for stunning footage, the storm brought chaos the city, knocking over trees and downing power lines.

According to a report from KTNV, more than 60,000 homes and businesses were without electricity – with a spokesperson from the city’s power supplier NV Energy saying it was the biggest outage they’d ever experienced.

It’s believed a lightning strike was the cause behind an attic fire that gutted an office building, as reported by Global News.

It got so intense that a pro baseball game was called off mid-match, with officials ruling it was too dangerous to continue play.

The city was drenched in a heavy downpour, copping roughly 270mm of rain.

Parts of the city were pelted with hail and battered by wind speeds that got as high as 120kmh.

And if that wasn’t enough, the area was also clouded by a dust storm.

According to a report from The Las Vegas Review Journal, the wild weather conditions have eased, but Las Vegas is expected to continue to experience poor visibility due to smoke from wildfires in California and Arizona.
