The team at Liftwear have come up with a design for a robotic spoon which combats the jerky involuntary movements people living with conditions like cerebral palsy and spinal injuries can experience, keeping the utensil level.

They call it the Liftware Level, and it has the potential to revolutionise mealtimes for those living with disabilities.

The secret is in the handle which contains motion sensors that sense hand movements.

A tiny computer uses this information to counteract movements which may tip the utensil and instructs the dual motors to keep the spoon (or fork, depending on what attachment you use) at the right angle for eating.

The technology is kind of along the lines of how your phone can detect gravity and switch the screen accordingly.

For people who find feeding themselves difficult, this could mean not only an easier way to eat but added independence.

Currently Liftware only ships the spoon in the US for about $260, but hopefully international shipping is rolled out soon, as the technology could mean big things for Aussies living with a disability.
