VIDEO: 'Optical illusion' leads to claims the Irish lotto is fixed

Cue the conspiracy theories people, this one's a doozy.

Irish National Lotto punters are up in arms after a ball in Saturday's Plus One draw appeared to show two numbers.

The ball was marked as 38 but some people reckon they saw a 33.

And when you're dealing with big bickies for prize money, of course people got their proverbial knickers in a twist.

Some people were convinced the whole thing was a sham:

But others reckoned it was just a trick of the light:

And that's the line the lotto company is running with.

According to UK reports, a spokesperson for the National Lottery assured punters that the draw was "independently verified" by global auditing company KPMG.

The statement appeared to have been published on Facebook, but links to it were broken when we checked on Monday morning.

"A brief reflection of the light during filming caused an illusion and some players to think there were two numbers on ball 38," the spokesperson was quoted by The Irish Times.

"This was not the case.

"The weight and size of all Lotto balls, and the numbers, are strictly checked in advance of each draw."

The jackpot for the draw was valued at $750,000.

No one took out that top prize, but according to the lotto results page, 22 people won prizes of about $750.
