Front Row is a new weekly column on nine.com.au bringing you behind the scenes of some of the Aussie entertainment industry’s biggest parties, premieres, and more. Got a tip? Email us at frontrow@nine.com.au.

This week, Front Row travelled two hours out of the city to a secret location to meet world-famous magician Dynamo. A true magician never spills their secrets, right? We thought so, too – until we got trapped near a rogue amateur who couldn’t wait to ruin the magic.

The trick that left King Charles flabbergasted

When you meet an internationally renowned illusionist making his first Australian appearance in 10 years, you expect to have your mind completely melted.

We’re talking about the guy who levitated beside a London double-decker bus, walked across the River Thames, and once left the then-Prince Charles holding his head in his hands in absolute disbelief.

Naturally, we asked for the royal treatment. Dynamo happily obliged, although he didn’t exactly ‘break’ his own fingers and bend them back into place (which left King Charles so horrified).

He performed the exact same mind-bending card trick he used on the King a few years ago – turning newspaper clippings into real money, this time Aussie money!

Front Row was flabbergasted.

Then came a second trick. How on earth did Dynamo read our minds? How did he know what we were thinking, and why was our answer already pre-written on the back of four random playing cards?

“Oh, that trick?” sniffed a guy standing right behind us.

What do you mean ‘that trick’? Rather than letting this Front Row author process a life-changing spiritual awakening, a local fan in the crowd decided to play party pooper.

When we tentatively whispered our theory on how Dynamo pulled it off, the self-proclaimed expert said: “Well, you’re very smart, because you’re 50 per cent right.”

Look, they were just excited and thankfully didn’t spill any real spoilers. And we were just happy to believe!

Dynamo himself, however, remained a vault.

“I’ll be honest, the only one who knows the secret to my tricks is my dog, Lily,” Dynamo laughed when we caught up with him after the show. “If my dog could talk, my god, you’d want to interview her instead of me.“

We also had to know: when he’s filling out boring government forms or customs cards at the airport, what does he actually write under ‘Occupation’?

“I do write ‘Magician’,” Dynamo admitted to Front Row.

“The problem is, whenever officials read it, they instantly demand proof. They want to see magic. So I end up having to do a card trick just to get through! But hey, it’s a great icebreaker. They definitely never forget me.”

Chaos causes Sydney streets to be closed off

With the intimate mind-reading out of the way, it was time for the grand spectacle.

Forget sold-out arenas – Dynamo closed off a quiet suburban driveway in Sydney for a lightning-fast, fly-in-fly-out show. There were camera crews, catering trucks, fans who flew in from Queensland, and at least two people who drove all the way from Campbelltown.

Then, in a classic suburban twist, a roller door slowly creaked open, and Dynamo emerged onto a residential driveway like the rockstar of sleight-of-hand.

As it turns out, the whole covert operation was staged alongside B&D Garage Doors to “bust Australia’s biggest home illusion” – specifically, the false belief that your garage is actually secure.

While we aren’t usually in the business of investigating residential roller doors, watching a world-famous illusionist turn a suburban driveway into a high-stakes magic arena is certainly one way to get our attention.

Just don’t tell the guy standing behind us – he’d probably claim he knows how the garage door works, too.
