Fifty years jail for Texas fajita thief

A US man has been sentenced to 50 years in jail for stealing $1.6 million worth of fajitas.

Gilberto Escamilla, 53, had been ordering fajita meat in his role at a juvenile detention centre in Texas, then selling them.

How many fajitas can you buy for $1.6 million?

Well, Escamilla got caught when 360kg of fajitas was delivered to the centre when he was having a medical appointment.

And staff were like, who ordered these?

And the delivery driver told them he'd been dropping fajitas off there for the past nine years.

It turns out, in spite of being a stone's throw from the Mexico border, this detention centre doesn't serve fajitas.

When authorities searched his house, they found more government-funded fajitas in his fridge.

Escamilla told the court the fajita scheme spun out of control.

"It got to the point where I couldn't control it anymore," he said.

He will be out of prison in the year 2068, if he lives to 103.

First-degree theft in Texas is treated harshly, with judges liable to hand out particularly heavy sentences to public servants.
