Daryl Braithwaite calls time on live performances after 58 years
Australian music legend Daryl Braithwaite has announced his retirement from live performances, calling time on a touring career spanning nearly 60 years.
The 76-year-old shared the news in a statement posted to social media on Tuesday evening, revealing ongoing physical challenges had made performing difficult.

“I would like to share this news with you all,” The Horses singer wrote.
“After much thought and consideration, I have made the difficult and sad decision to step back from performing live gigs.
“For some time now it has been increasingly physically challenging for me to sing comfortably and as a result it has taken the joy out of performing, which has always been so important to me.”
Braithwaite said the decision had not been an easy one after spending 58 years in the music industry.
“I sincerely want to thank all of the dedicated and loyal supporters and all of the people and organisations that I have been associated with who have been such a significant part of my singing life.”
“With much love and I thank you.”
In early 2025, Braithwaite was forced to cancel and reschedule several shows due to an unspecified medical condition, which he said was making his voice break down.
“It is so frustrating… you try all of the old and new secret remedies and hope,” he wrote at the time.
He had returned to touring after that setback, and his website lists gigs aboard a Norwegian cruise liner from late May to early June as his most recent performances.
Once the lead singer for Sherbet, Braithwaite had two number one hits in Australia as a solo artist: You’re My World in 1974, and iconic cult classic The Horses 17 years later.
The latter track – a cover of a song written by Rickie Lee Jones and Walter Becker – remains popular to this day, having racked up almost 100 million listens on streaming service Spotify.
Braithwaite was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2017.
