A father’s alternative discipline strategy for his son has sparked debate after it was live streamed to Facebook last week.

Bryan Thornhill, from the US state of Virginia, has filmed his 10-year-old son running to school in the rain after he was banned from the bus for “bullying”.

He explained that his son had been “kicked off” the school bus for three days.

As punishment, his dad made him jog the 1.6km journey to school.

“Since he’s been running to school this week his behaviour’s been much better, his teachers have approved of his behaviour,” he said.

“He hasn’t gotten in trouble at school this week.

“This right here is just old school simple parenting.”

The video quickly went viral, clocking up more than 24 million views after being shared by the WarriorCode Facebook page.

Many commenters on the page agreed with the dad.

“I bet you this kid grows up to understand actions and consequences, but more importantly, respect for others,” on Facebooker said.

But others weren’t so kind.

“I think his problem comes from the father…. I can’t stand you, and I don’t even know you,” another said.

Others were up in arms about the fact that Thornhill posted the video on social media.

“If you did this without feeling the need to video it you wouldn't look like a d---head,” one Facebooker said.

Since the video went viral, Thornhill said he hoped it would inspire other parents.

“Make sure you show your children you love them with hugs and discipline,” he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

“Parenting isn't always about being a friend, it’s about leading them into the future.”
