He was the chart-topping sensation of the '90s, the smooth RnB singer behind some of the biggest club hits and inspirational anthems of the time.

But behind closed doors, the private life of music superstar R. Kelly (real name Robert Sylvester Kelly) was anything but glamorous.

Surviving R. Kelly profiles one of our generation's most notorious figures and the many women who endured his wrath.

In this gripping documentary, the allegations of abuse, paedophilia, coercion and predatory behaviour toward women levelled against the 52-year-old are explored over six revealing episodes.

It begins with an exploration into Kelly's troubled childhood as well as his rise to fame and illegal marriage to then 15-year-old singer Aaliyah.

Throughout the series, we get access to exclusive interviews with survivors, family members, and other influential people in the singer's life.

Fellow musicians including John Legend and Sparkle, and talk show host Wendy Williams also play a prominent part in painting a detailed picture of a man loved by so many, but feared by some closest to him.

Surviving R. Kelly also shines a light on the racial prejudice associated with the alleged abuse, the black female victims pointing out that public recognition has been sorely lacking.

Kelly has denied allegations of these sinister crimes, pleading not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted three teenage girls and a woman in alleged incidents dating back to 1998.

If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison.
