The Super Bowl used to be all about touchdowns, team rivalries and who came out on top. Not anymore.

In 2024, the biggest event in the NFL's calendar is more about the female superstars in the VIP boxes – namely Taylor Swift and Beyoncé – than the action on the field.

Swift has been the centre of attention at NFL games since she first attended a Chiefs game in September 2023 and the Super Bowl is no different, with all eyes on her even before the big game.

Fans and media outlets speculated that she would attend and bookies around the globe even ran bets on if she'd be there to support boyfriend Travis Kelce.

"The NFL would be pleading for her to come. 'What do you need? How can we help?'" Nine's Entertainment Editor Richard Wilkins predicted last week. He was right.

Swift arrived in style on Monday, surrounded by her A-lister friends including Blake Lively, who joined her in the VIP section to watch the game in Chiefs-themed outfits.

Fans have documented her every reaction on social media, posting photos and videos of her celebrating each Chiefs score on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter.

There's no denying that Swift has become one of the biggest players of not just the Super Bowl, but this season of the NFL.

Beyoncé took the opportunity to tease new music when she appeared in a Verizon ad, which aired just after half-time, and she didn't stop there.

The music legend shocked fans by releasing two new tracks, 16 Carriages and Texas Hold 'Em, on streaming service Tidal moments later.

The songs are expected to hit all streaming platforms after the game and her new album, Renaissance (Act II), will be released on March, 29.

It will be her first since Renaissance in July 2022.

In a matter of minutes, Beyoncé managed to steal the spotlight from both the Super Bowl itself and the half-time show, which aired just before her announcement.

Usher headlined the show with major artists like Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Ludacris and will.i.am joining him onstage, but even they couldn't compete with Beyoncé and Swift's star power.

It's not the first time Beyoncé has accidentally stolen the limelight from other artists during the Super Bowl halftime show either.

In 2016, she performed during the half-time show with Bruno Mars and Coldplay, but viewers only had eyes (and ears) for the Formation singer.

Fans said she "outshone" Mars and Coldplay and she's done the same today, outshining Usher without even having to set foot on the stage.
