A look back at Shane Warne's iconic Kath & Kim appearance

Kate Rafferty

Back in 2007, Shane Warne was on the brink of retirement from first-class cricket, and at the same time, the nation's beloved sitcom Kath & Kim was looking to close curtains on its long-running show.

The news was pretty devastating for Aussie audiences, who had so enjoyed the years of watching these two greats on their televisions.

But it also made for one of the greatest proposals in Aussie TV — a Shane Warne cameo on Kath & Kim.

Most might have forgotten this detail about the collaboration, but ultimately, to end their years of entertaining Aussie crowds with a bang, Kath & Kim writers came up with a golden concept.

They decided their final episode would throw the spotlight on the ever-frazzled, and completely loveable Sharon, who would marry 'Wayne', a Shane Warne impersonator played by Warne himself. Watch the video above.

Obviously, Warne was there with bells on.

The episode, aptly titled 'The Wedding of the Century', saw Sharon, played by Aussie actress Magda Szubanski, fall in love with 'Wayne', and promptly don a wedding gown and prepare for their big day.

Naturally, the pair decide to marry at Luna Park. A slow motion video captures Warne bowling the ring box to Sharon with expert skill, before explaining to her why he was late for their nuptials.

When he runs up to her, Sharon asks, surprised, "Was that a flipper?"

"Sorry I'm late, I've been practising at me cricket as a surprise for you Sharon," Wayne replies.

A dazzled Sharon seems at a loss for words. "I love you, Wayne," she says, before embracing him in a big, wet pash.

Sharon — in her gown and veil, and Wayne in a white suit and matching tie — are then pronounced man and wife while aboard a drop-ride, before kicking on in a carousel, decked out by Kath and Kim.

Szubanksi has since shared her grief at the news of Warne's death. At 1:49 am on March 5, the actress tweeted:

"I've woken in the middle of the night to this terrible terrible news I'm in complete shock.

"This is just too sad. Devastating.

"Incredible to think that bright, cheeky spark has been snuffed out... My deepest condolences to his family, friends, loved ones and fans."
