Divergent's Shailene Woodley cringes over first headshot: 'Look at that hair, what was my mum thinking?'

Everyone has that one childhood photo that captured them in their peak awkward-hair phase…and Divergent's Shailene Woodley is no exception.

So when Jimmy Fallon unearthed the former child star's first headshot direct from the nineties archives, the 24-year-old squirmed over her mum's questionable hairdo choices.

"Look at that hair! What was my mum thinking?" she says in the clip above. "She spent two hours blow-drying that hair."

In fact, if Shailene could go back in time, she would have kept her locks long enough to style into Princess Leia's trademark Star Wars buns. Wouldn't we all?!

"I was probably five or six and super into Princess Leia," she said. "I was so angry that my hair was so short because I couldn't do the Leia buns."

These days, Shailene wears her locks much longer, after recently cutting it short to film the latest instalment in the Divergent series, hitting Australian cinemas on April 14.

Dodgy childhood hair aside, Shailene shot to fame seven years after her adorable first headshot was taken, thanks to her small TV role as Kaitlin Cooper on The O.C. in 2003.

But it was her first major role in the 2008 TV series The Secret Life of the American Teenager that landed the actress, then 17, firmly on the starlet map.
