Sandra Bullock reveals she's taking an indefinite break from acting

Sandra Bullock is taking some time away from her acting career – and she has no idea how long the break is going to last.

The star previously mentioned she'd be taking a short break, a sentiment she doubled down on in an interview this week with THR.

"I'm so burnt out. I'm so tired, and I'm so not capable of making healthy, smart decisions and I know it," she told the publication.

Most recently, Bullock starred in The Lost City opposite Channing Tatum, which was released earlier this year. She also has a role Brad Pitt's upcoming film Bullet Train, which is due to hit theatres in August.

But that could be the last time we see the star for quite some time. When asked how long her break would be, she replied: "I really don't know", adding, "I don't want to be beholden to anyone's schedule other than my own."

She continued: "Work has always been steady for me, and I've been so lucky. I realised it possibly was becoming my crutch. It was like opening up a fridge all the time and looking for something that was never in the fridge."

"I said to myself, 'Stop looking for it here because it doesn't exist here. You already have it; establish it, find it and be OK not having work to validate you,'" she added.

Bullock certainly deserves a break: as well as acting in The Lost City, she also served as the film's producer. It was a roaring success, making $US187.7 million ($269 million) worldwide at the box office.

She was passionate about making the central character a strong female role. "I wanted to be in a movie that had action and adventure and comedy and elements of romance, and have it be on a big scale like the guys have it," she told 9Honey when the film was released.

In the film, Bullock plays reclusive author Loretta Sage, who writes about fantasy places in her novels. To sell her books, she uses the services of a cover model named Alan, aka Dash (played by Channing Tatum), who is overzealous and harbours a crush on Loretta.

Over the course of her career, Sandra Bullock has starred in over 50 movies –– and won an Oscar for her role in 2009's The Blind Side.
