Former 'Sale of the Century' hosts come together for the first time

Hard to believe it's been nearly 30 years since Tony Barber was on our TV sets asking the questions on Sale of the Century.

He was so synonymous with the show that many of us thought he was always the host: the one who ran out each night imitating sporting moves such as bowling a cricket ball as he made his way to the lectern.

But Tony parted ways with the show way back in 1991. And two more hosts followed in his footsteps, although none did the Tony moves at the opening of the show each night.

Glenn Ridge took over the baton for 11 years after Tony, and after a few years in hibernation, Sale came back in 2005 under the banner Temptation with Ed Philips.

Amazingly, all three hosts have never come together -- until recently. Combined, they have asked more than a million questions to contestants, some of which were lucky enough to pick up cash and prizes that changed their lives forever.

Sale is coming up to its 40th anniversary since its launch, and while plenty of game shows have followed since its demise in 2005, none have been more memorable or had such a run on our television sets.

Tony turns 79 next month and still has the energy and enthusiasm that he displayed on the show all those years back. In fact he is still asking the questions! You see, once a month Tony has a Sale night at the Flinders Café south of Melbourne, where he runs his old show and helps raise a few bob for the local Country Fire Service, recycling the old questions he once asked on the box.
