'Wildly embarrassed': US singer Ryan Adams issues lengthy apology to Melbourne fans after 'train wreck' show

Ryan Adams has issued a lengthy apology to fans who attended his Melbourne show over the weekend revealing he is "wildly embarrassed and disappointed".

The US singer-songwriter, who was previously married to Mandy Moore, performed on stage at Melbourne's Hamer Hall on Sunday 12 October when he stormed off stage and ended the concert early, as reported by The Music.

Attendees who claimed to be at the show took to a Reddit thread with varying accounts of what happened.

"Melbourne was an absolute bust," one use wrote, claiming that the singer "berated ushers for not doing their jobs on controlling the seizure-causing flashes" and "left the stage telling us he'd be back when we could do our job".

The user revealed that they decided to leave the show early after Adams apparently "didn't complete a single song in the second half".

Another user claimed that the show was "so uncomfortable".

"His voice had gone by the second set. He said he was ill. Fair enough. But maybe battle through a song or two and get off," they continued.

"Back at our hotel room and am still processing the train wreck from tonight," another Reddit user wrote.

In the wake of the backlash, Adams shared a lengthy statement to Instagram to apologise for the evening.

"I am so wildly embarrassed and disappointed about last night," he wrote.

"No disrespect to any other places here, but #Melbourne is my jam.

"It's my fav place here and the crowds are amazing."

Adams proceeded to claim that the reason for his behaviour was connected to a medical condition that he claims he has had for his "whole life" and causes "ocular seizures" that he says can be set off by camera flashes in the audience.

"The LED camera flash on I phones and Androids going off in what to me from stage is a pitch black environment. I have no way to expect the flash. And what happens over time when there are so many, is I have an ocular seizure and I don't know where I am, I don't know what my guitar is and I panic and become disoriented," he wrote.

"The saying 'fight or flight' applies here…. You want to run, you want to make yourself not have a seizure.

"Last night I unfortunately had to go through that several times in front of 2,500 people…. Which breaks my heart. Because I was crushing that show. And set two was going to be an absolute monster."

He also shared that he "was not drunk" during the show.

"I love you all and I'm so sorry," he added.

"You did nothing wrong. It's normal to take photos and it's normal to use a flash."

He concluded that Melbourne was "only the second time" this happened on the whole tour.

The first being in Belfast, Northern Ireland where he claims "the papers took it out on me".
