Rod Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster has revealed doctor’s discovered an “underlying health issue” after the singer was forced to cancel the remainder of his tour.

The news comes after Stewart, 81, experienced a series of public health issues, which eventually ended with him undergoing a coronary stent procedure.

Fans became concerned for the star after he was spotted using an oxygen tank side-stage at a show in Utah, which Lancaster, 55, explained was due to a series of upper respiratory infections.

“He was at a concert where there was very high altitude. So it would affect anybody,” she said during an appearance on the YouTube series, At Home With Vanessa.

“But what we didn’t know was there was an underlying heart issue.”

She went on to explain that Stewart is “one of the fittest guys I know”, not just for his age but in general, they had never expected a heart issue to be the root of the cause.

Fortunately, doctors found the problem at the right time.

“They detected a slight blockage which needed a stent, which, according to a lot of research, it appears that most people over the age of 65 will often need and require a stent,” she explained.

“As one gets older, you’re most likely over the age of 65, 75, to get heart disease or to get prostate cancer. And my husband’s had both.

“When people say they die of natural causes, that’s what they mean. They die of heart disease or cancer because that’s naturally we’re we’re living longer; we’re going to die of something. But luckily for Rod, it was detected, and now he’s eager to get back.”

On August 12, Stewart announced that he would be cancelling the remainder of his tour dates, needing to take time off to undergo the procedure.

“I’m deeply disappointed to miss these shows and sorry to let my fans down, but I look forward to getting back on stage and having a good time with you all again soon,” he wrote via a statement shared to social media.

Lancaster explained that the doctors had told Stewart to take the time off from touring for four weeks, and now that the time has passed “he’s already back in the gym” preparing to return to the stage.

But, she ensured fans that the singer is not pushing himself too far, reminding them he has a whole team of people making sure his recovery goes smoothly.

“Between me and my brother and his trainer and doctors and everyone you know, we’re not letting him get away with it.,” she laughed.

“He has to do as he’s told.“
