Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron announces he's leaving the band after 27 years: 'Forever grateful'

Pearl Jam rocker Matt Cameron is leaving the band after almost three decades.

The musician, 62, who is a drummer in the group, shared the news with fans in a statement posted on the group's official Instagram page.

"After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam," he said in a statement.

"Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter."

He added that he's "forever grateful" for his time in the band and thanked fans.

"I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It's been an incredible journey. More to follow. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

"Peace and Love, Matt Cameron."

The band also shared a statement, praising Cameron and his talents.

"Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer," they said.

"He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings.

"It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt."

Eight months ago, the band made headlines when they paused their Sydney show to pay tribute to two Australian teenage victims of the suspected Laos mass methanol poisoning.

Cameron, who hails from California, first joined the rock group in 1998.

The group is known for hits including Even Flow, Black, Do the Evolution and Just Breathe.
