Aussie icon Nikki Webster reveals she doesn't get royalties for her hit song Strawberry Kisses

Australian icon Nikki Webster doesn't make as much as you would think from her early 2000s hit, Strawberry Kisses.

On 2DayFM's Hughesy, Ed & Erin breakfast show Wednesday morning, the singer revealed she actually doesn't get any royalties from the super successful track.

When asked by Erin Molan how much she would get from 2DayFM playing her song, Webster replied, "not enough I don't think."

The Aussie pop star elaborated, saying that she doesn't receive any monthly cheques for Strawberry Kisses since she didn't contribute to writing it.

"I know the songwriters do, 'cause I didn't write the song," she told the 2Day FM hosts.

"It's recoupable back to the record label for all the money they invest into you as an artist," Webster explained. 

"Having the most expensive video clip in Australia back when I did Strawberry Kisses with the robot - I'm still recouping that money," she added. 

However, Webster joked that she knows the songwriters are "very happy" with her right now after Strawberry Kisses has been getting renewed attention thanks to the Matildas football team.

Strawberry Kisses was released on Webster's debut album Follow Your Heart back in 2001.

The song has been an iconic Australian track for over two decades, but is recently going through a resurgence thanks to the Tillies.

After the team was recorded singing the track on their way back to Queensland after beating Canada, goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold revealed that the song has become a "team favourite" during the Women's World Cup.

"I don't know where that's come from. I think actually it was Steph Catley's favourite song and now we've all jumped on the wagon," Arnold explained.

Matildas defender Steph Catley later confirmed that she would listen to the song on a CD she had growing up.

"It was a single and I'd just listen to it over and over again, so it reminds me of my childhood," she said in a video posted to the Matildas official social media.

"It's happiness in song and it just gets me going on my day - and in the changeroom apparently now."

After being played the audio clip of Arnold talking about how Strawberry Kisses has become the team song, Webster said that it was "an honour."

The singer then opened up on the radio breakfast show about having people sending her clips of the Matildas listening to and talking about her song.

"It was so cool," the Aussie singer admitted after seeing clips of the team singing it on the plane back to Brisbane.

"They would've been my age around the time and it's like nostalgic and something that maybe got them inspired as a young kid and now they're inspiring young girls and boys of today," Webster shared.
