'Is this intentional?': Ariana Grande struggles through acceptance speech as microphone towers over her

Ariana Grande has taken two VMAs home tonight, but all anyone can talk about is the moment she couldn't reach the microphone.

After being named the winner of the Best Video award – the biggest of the event – Grande walked onto the stage only to presented with a microphone that stood above her head.

Host LL Cool J had presented the award, and seemingly hadn't thought of the height difference before stepping back to allow Grande to have her moment.

While LL Cool J stands at a solid 188cm, Grande barely scrapes in at 157cm.

But, instead of making it a big deal, Grande handled it as the professional that she is.

Already in high heels, the Wicked star attempted to stand further onto her tippy toes as she lifted her head up to reach the microphone.

As she spoke, she shuffled between standing behind the microphone and beside it, as it tended to block the audience's view of her face.

"Does this get taller every time? Is this intentional?" she asked when she first stepped onto the stage.

The award was Grande's second of the night, after already taking home the Moon Person for Best Pop, both awards for her song brighter days ahead.

Taking to the stage for the second time, Grande began her speech by thanking her fans, saying that she loves each of them "with every fibre of my being".

"Thank you, MTV," she continued.

"Thank you to my dad, who acted in this video for the first time in his life. He's the best scene partner and dad in the world."

The singer went on to thank Christian Breslauer, who directed the video for brighter days ahead.

"Thank you so much for bringing these songs and this vision to life and articulating them visually in a way that was fanciful, yet specific and vulnerable, yet protective all at once," she said.

"Oh my goodness, you guys, this is... You are the best in the world. I just wanna say, these videos that mean so much and define us as artists forever take a village, so I would really like to thank the village.

"And thank you to my therapists and gay people. I love you."
