The Modern Family kids just secured huge pay rises -- but there's a catch

Julia Naughton

The original kids from US sitcom Modern Family grew up on our television screens.

Now, as adults, they've negotiated hefty pay rises for themselves -- but they'll still fall short in the pay stakes compared to their older castmates.

Ariel Winter, 19, Sarah Hyland, 26, Nolan Gould, and Rico Rodriguez, both 18, were all underage when the Emmy-winning show first aired in 2009.

The four young actors pocketed close to $US15-25,000 per episode when they first started on the show, and by the eighth season, were earning $US75,000 per episode, Bustle previously reported.

Now, they've been locked in for two more years on the hit show. Deadline reports like their older co-stars, they have secured salary increases of over 40 percent taking their haul to over $US100,000 per episode.

As Modern Family averages between 22 and 24 episodes per season, that means they could each rake in $4.8 million for their work on Seasons 8 and 9.

The studio turned to the young stars after closing two-year deals with Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara.

The original adult cast reportedly earned around $US350,000 per episode in Season 8 to about $500,000 in Season 9.

Modern Family’s current child cast members, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who portrays Lily, and Jeremy Maguire, who plays Joe, joined the show later and have more time on their initial salary contracts.

Production on Season 9 is set to begin in early August.

Ariel's participation on the upcoming seasons is not expected to be affected by her commencement of college later this year. The young actress has enrolled at UCLA and has previously revealed she plans to take subjects in political science.
