Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett has filmed himself getting a mammogram to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The actor took viewers inside the clinic experience in an Instagram video.

"After my husband had a scare a few years ago, and with cancer running in both of our families, screenings are important to us," he revealed.

Bennett is newly married to his husband, Jaymes Vaughan, who he tied the knot with in March in a blissful ceremony in Mexico.

In his video, the actor went on to emphasise the simplicity of the procedure, explaining that "after a few different positions and x-rays, that's it!"

He also made sure to include close-ups and shots of him getting both of his pecs squished by the clinic's mammography unit – a machine designed specifically to take x-rays of breast tissue.

Bennett also encouraged his fans to speak with their doctors, as a mammogram is not a procedure routinely offered to men, who are statistically at lower risk of developing breast cancer.

Yet, a mammogram scan every two years is "the best way" for women between the ages of 50 and 74 to screen themselves for breast cancer, according to Cancer Council Australia.

The Australian Department of Health advises men are best to "report any changes or concerns they have about their breasts to their doctor", rather than seek out a mammogram.

They write that since breast cancer is both rarer and harder to detect in men, "the harms of screening mammograms are currently assessed as outweighing the benefits".
