Matthew Perry's family speak out after actor's death: 'We are heartbroken by the tragic loss'

Matthew Perry's heartbroken family have spoken about their "tragic loss" following news of the actor's death at the age of 54.

The family issued a statement in the hours after the Friends star was reportedly found unresponsive in a hot tub at an LA-area home.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother," the family told People magazine.

"Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend."

"You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

No foul play is suspected by law enforcement agencies, according to multiple US media outlets, however an exact cause of death remains unknown.

It's understood earlier on Saturday the actor had been playing pickleball, a sport combining elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis into one game that can be played either indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court.

After returning home, it's understood he sent his assistant on an errand and when the assistant returned home, he discovered the actor unresponsive and called emergency services.

According to CNN a 911 call came in at 4.07pm Saturday (10.07am Sunday AEDT) for a water rescue emergency. Minutes later, at 4.10pm, LAPD responded and then characterised the call as a death investigation shortly after.

Matthew's parents, actor John Bennett Perry and Suzanne Perry (nee Langford), split a year after he was born in 1969.

Both went on to remarry and have more children, giving Matthew five siblings.

John Bennett and Debbie Perry have daughter Mia.

While his mum married Dateline journalist, Keith Morrison, becoming Suzanne Morrison and welcoming Caitlin, Emily, Willy and Madeleine.

John Bennett, Suzanne and Keith were also seen around the actor's LA home in Pacific Palisades soon after the news of his death broke.

Fans have also been visiting, laying floral tributes at the front of the property for the comedian, who was also know for The Odd Couple, The Whole Nine Yards and Fools Rush In.

While fans of TV sitcom Friends have been leaving flowers outside the New York building used as the show's apartment block.
