Patti Newton admits she will 'never get over' Bert in heartfelt Logies speech: 'I know he is with me'

Patti Newton received a standing ovation as she took to the Logies stage to present the newly-renamed 'Bert Newton award for the Most Popular Presenter'.

Addressing the crowd, and standing before an early photo of her with her late husband, Patti was gracious for the warm reception. (Watch the moment in the video above.)

"I actually didn't think I was going to be able to do this tonight, because it is still very raw and I will never get over him not being here," she told the audience.

"But I know he is with me. And here... he is inside me," she added. Watch the video above.

Patti explained the 'Bert' necklace she was spotted wearing on the red carpet earlier in the night.

"My daughter had this Bert [necklace] made for me, so I will be wearing this forever around my neck. I will know who I am and when I cannot remember anymore, I will say who's that? It will be Bert."

Patti took the chance to reflect on her late husband's "bravery" and the great experiences he had over his career.

"He had this thing where he would say, 'Not everybody lives their dream,' but he did, and he loved it, he really did live his dream."

Patti noted that from Bert's time on WIN Television to starting on The Late Show at 18, he had a list of wonderful experiences she and their children loved to talk to him about.

"He really did live his dream," she adds, "but the one thing he really loved was this show, the Logies. This was his baby."

In her speech, she also acknowledged Bert's other "love" – his daughter Lauren and son Matthew and six beautiful grandchildren.

"I have been his partner for 57 years, it is a long time," she said. When the crowd erupted into applause, she was quick to respond.

"Thank you, but I don't need applause because I have loved every minute of those 57 years.

She then took the audience back to a comment her husband made to her when they first got married.

"He did say to me when we got married, 'Look, you know, we'll have a few ups and downs, but it'll never be boring'. And he was so right, it was never boring."

Patti then took her chance to introduce the Logies award that has now been named in his honour.

"I've been so blessed that he chose me, and I think that's why we're so pleased that the award for the most popular presenter is going to be known as the 'Bert Newton Award for the Most Popular Presenter'," she said.

She then took the chance to make a cheeky joke.

"I was only thinking today, if I could just ask him how he feels about this particular award being named in his honour, and I'm absolutely certain that he would say, 'What? Not the gold, then?"

Patti ended her speech: "He never wanted to be forgotten, so I hope he never is."

She then went on to present the award, which went to Hamish Blake, for presenting Nine's Lego Masters.

In his own speech, Blake acknowledged the fact Bert "loved what he did" was something that struck him.

Speaking of the late presenter's endless generosity and kindness, Blake added, "There will never be another Bert."
