Logies 2019: The story behind Costa Georgiadis' 'beard moment' with Julia Morris

Costa Georgiadis may have kept a straight face when he strode onto the Logies stage alongside a bearded Julia Morris, but it was a different story behind the scenes.

The duo presented the award for Most Outstanding Entertainment Program together on Sunday night, their matching facial hair leaving the room in stitches.

Wearing a lustrous beard to match that of the popular Gardening Australia host, Morris quipped: "Did yours start with the menopause as well?"

Speaking to the Today Show on Monday — draped in a magnificent cape of foliage — Georgiadis said he almost lost his composure when he caught sight of his co-presenter ahead of their big moment.

"I just cracked up backstage when I saw her, because I couldn't see her, I just saw this beard and I thought it's a guy in a dress," he told David Campbell and Richard Wilkins.

The ABC presenter, who is a landscape architect by trade, also confirmed the skit had been rehearsed ahead of time.

"Julia is such a beautiful soul, I had so much fun when we rehearsed that," he continued, also praising Morris for drawing out the humour of the moment.

"She really just allowed the silence to be the space and let it work."

It was a big night for Georgiadis, who picked up the Logie for Most Popular Presenter, while Gardening Australia was named Most Popular Lifestyle Program.

He was also in the running for the Gold Logie, which was eventually awarded to comedian and fellow ABC personality Tom Gleeson.

"This Logie is going to travel the country, it's not collecting dust," Georgiadis said as he accepted his award.

"I want it sitting on compost bins, I want it in community gardens, I want it going everywhere."

Georgiadis took over as presenter of Gardening Australia in 2012, stepping into Peter Cundall's shoes.
