British Pop star Lily Allen has revealed she has bipolar disorder.

The 31-year-old singer opened up about her struggles on Twitter, during a heated debate about the treatment of pensioners.

In response to user @Ged_2345 who suggested that Lily might have mental health issues, she replied: "I DO have mental health issues. Bi-polar, post-natal depression, and PTSD, does that make my opinion void [sic]."

As the conversation escalated, Lily explained that her PTSD occurred after her son was stillborn at six months in 2010.

"I lay in a hospital bed with my deceased son stuck between my legs halfway out of my body for ten hours," she told her 5.9 million followers.

The debate turned especially ugly when a user blamed Lily for her son's death: "doesn't help going on drug binges while pregnant" they said.

Lily replied: "I didn't miscarry, I went into early labour and my son died from his chord wrapped round his neck."

One user then sent Lily a tasteless picture of a cartoon frog reflecting how her son died.

Lily has announced she would be taking a break from Twitter and handed her account over to a friend to try and stop the abuse.

"My timeline is full of the most disgusting, sexist, misogynistic, racist... Really, new levels. I'm no masochist so I'll be back x," she said.
