'$120k for flights': True extent of Kyle Sandilands' contract and perks revealed in court documents

The massive salary paid to Kyle Sandilands to present his top-rating radio show, The Kyle and Jackie O show, was well known.

But now court documents have revealed the perks that Sandilands also received as part of his contract with Australian Radio Network (ARN), the owner of KIIS FM.

Multiple media outlets are reporting details of the generous extras he received on top of his base salary as he heads to court to fight the termination.

Sandilands' announced last Friday that his contract with ARN had been terminated over an alleged breach that stems back to the February 20 on-air argument with his long-time co-host Jackie O, whose real name is Jackie Henderson.

At the time, he said he would be calling in the lawyers to fight the termination, which he deemed 'invalid'.

"I've got a contract until 2034. I've got rights under that contract. And ARN hasn't honoured the contract," he said in a statement provided to nine.com.au announcing the termination.

"So, it's over to my lawyers."

Sandilands wasted no time acting on his threat, with a statement of claim filed in the federal court the same day.

According to news.com.au, it reportedly included a breakdown of Sandilands' salary and perks.

It included a $7.4 million annual base salary, a $200,000 fee for 'consultancy', a $2 million annual 'trademark fee' for licensing the show, a $120,000 flight allowance and $500,000 a year for "contra airtime", that is the on-air advertising component of the show.

That brings the total to an eye-watering $10,020,000 – $20,000 more than his long-reported total annual package.

Nine.com.au reported on Monday that court documents were served on Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), a subsidiary of ARN that holds the licence for KIIS 1065 Sydney.

ARN announced the news in an ASX market update released the same day.

Sandilands' legal team is arguing that ARN's claim he committed "serious misconduct" during his on-air stoush with Henderson is untrue and his termination on the grounds of serious misconduct is therefore invalid.

ARN disputes Sandilands' claims and said it intends to defend the proceedings.

The court action comes more than four weeks after the long-time co-hosts got involved in a dust-up during a segment discussing the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

When Henderson started to quote the former prince's astrology chart, it caused Sandilands to explode.

"You're off with the fairies," he said. "You are unfocused, you don't give a sh--," he said.

"It's affecting other things. Your fixation on this has made you almost unworkable."

When Henderson responded that she was "totally offended", Sandilands doubled down with his criticism, which Henderson labelled "a total attack".

Henderson did not come to work the next day, or the following week.

Then came the bombshell announcement that Henderson would not be returning to the show, in a statement released by ARN.

The statement said Henderson had given notice that she could not continue to work with Sandilands, and ARN had therefore terminated the services agreement with Henderson.

ARN said it had provided written notice to Sandilands that his behaviour during the show was "an act of serious misconduct", which was in breach of his services agreement.

He was given 14 days to remedy the breach.

In the days that followed, both Henderson and Sandilands took aim at ARN.

Henderson was first to break her silence, saying she "did not quit or resign", and would be taking legal action.

Sandilands released his own statement four days later, in which she said he was committed to his 10-year contract, which was set to run until 2033.
