Kurt Cobain's file released by FBI 27 years after his death

The FBI has quietly released a 10-page report on the 1994 death of Nirvana guitarist and frontman Kurt Cobain.

The file, released to "The Vault" — the FBI's Freedom of Information Act library — contains letters asking the law enforcement agency to reopen its investigation into Cobain's death, citing speculative media like TV documentaries.

"I only wish to receive justice for and others who loved this man as much as I did. This man was Kurt Cobain, belonging to a band called Nirvana, and it was origanally [sic] thought and still accepted as the truth that he committed suicide," one person wrote to the FBI in 2007. "There has since been evidence found that he was killed and didn't commit suicide as originally thought."

Another wrote, "Millions of fans around the world would like to see the inconsistencies surrounding the death cleared up for once and for all. It is sad to think that an injustice of this nature can be allowed in the United States."

The letter writers' names were redacted from the release.

"We appreciate your concern that Mr. Cobain may have been the victim of a homicide," said one response to a letter in the file. "However, most homicide/death investigations generally fall within the jurisdiction of state and local authorities… Based on the information you provided, we are unable to identify any violation of federal law within the investigative jurisdiction of the FBI."

According to Rolling Stone, who first reported that the file had been made public, the 10-page report contains pages of production notes from a 1997 fax from the television series Unsolved Mysteries, which featured a segment on Cobain's death in 1997.

Kurt Cobain died by suicide in April 1994, leaving behind his wife Courtney Love and their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.
