Simple Minds and Slik drummer Kenny Hyslop dead aged 73: 'Lived a lively life'

Simple Minds drummer Kenny Hyslop has died. He was 73.

The Scottish musician was best known as a member of the bands Simple Minds and Slik.

Metro reported the star died after "'struggling with poor health".

The news was confirmed by Hyslop's former Silk bandmate Midge Ure on social media.

"Just about to board the @British_Airways flight from JFK and heard my old friend/Slik/Simple Minds drummer Kenny Hyslop has passed way. He lived a lively life!" the guitarist wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

"Huge condolences to his friends and family. He was much loved," Ure added.

Hyslop first started out as a drummer in the 70s in the R&B band Salvation.

The drummer joined the band in 1972 alongside Ure. The group was later renamed Slik.

The band was best known for their UK number one hit song Forever and Ever, which was released in 1976 on their debut – and only – album which was self-titled Silk.

The group, who again changed their name to PVC2, disbanded shortly after.

Hyslop then went on to join the Scottish rock band Simple Minds in 1981, replacing their drummer Brian McGee.

He performed on just one of their tracks, Promised You a Miracle, and joined the band on the first leg of their Sons and Fascination Tour before departing the group after a year.

After leaving Simple Minds, Hyslop formed his own electronic band Set the Tone and later started the Scottish pop group One O' Clock Gang.

The musician has been remembered by fans on social media for his longtime contribution to the industry stretching back to the 70s.

"Such sad news. I had the pleasure of working with Kenny Hyslop on a local music/charity project a few years back, and he was simply a lovely guy. Very kind and fun," one person wrote on X.

"Sad news about Kenny Hyslop. Rest in peace, Kenny. I worked with him a few times, when I was in my twenties. A very good drummer," another person shared.
