Now five years on from her comments, the Dancing with the Stars alum has addressed how she came to the "beautiful revelation" she was attracted to people – not just men.
"Coming out is one of the most vulnerable and empowering things that you can do," Hough said in a candid new sit-down on The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast this week.
The actress opened up about her coming out journey admitting for her it was "not about being straight or gay or bi or queer."
"It's more about, I think I'm just learning like what love is and I love people and I don't know what I'm attracted to, but I choose you," she explained to host Jamie Kern.
"That is the freedom of the love that I was starting to experience in seeing people."
"I was starting to see people and seeing their hearts and seeing their beauty and their essence coming through in a way that I was like, wow, I love people and I don't know if it's a sexual attraction or a 'this' attraction, but I'm just seeing people," Hough recalled.
"That was such a beautiful revelation too," Hough said.
The Save Haven actress tied the knot with Laich in 2017 before they split in 2020 after nearly three years of marriage. The couple finalised their divorce in 2022.
"We have lovingly and carefully taken the time we have needed to arrive at our decision to separate," the announced their split in a statement to People
"We have lovingly and carefully taken the time we have needed to arrive at our decision to separate," they said adding they still "share an abundance of love and respect".
