“So for the better part of the past decade, most people don’t know this, but I suffered in silence battling a deadly mystery illness, and other than a very small circle of family and friends, I hid it from the rest of the world,” he said.

Manganiello went on to say that he had seen “the best doctors in the world” and none of them had been able to explain what his illness was or how it had started.

“All their attempts to treat it with high-power biologic drugs only exacerbated my symptoms and then unlocked a host of brutal side effects that wound up plaguing me for years,” he added.

“And then in attempts to buy myself time I underwent very serious operations and procedures that mutilated parts of my body and left me so weak at times that I couldn’t stand up or walk.

“I spent months and months heavily medicated while dealing with excruciating bouts of chronic pain.”

For the past three years, Manganiello has been writing his memoir, which he says “documents my 10-year search for answers”.

Through his health journey, Manganiello said he has “made some absolutely unbelievable discoveries,” and has become open to “radical and unorthodox techniques and ideas that lie beyond the boundaries of Western medicine”.

His memoir was announced by People magazine, with the Magic Mike star telling the publication that his illness was the most difficult time of his life, but also his greatest adventure.

Manganiello shared that he travelled the world for answers, learning about his ancestors who lived with chronic illness and using “shamans, pagan rituals, and ancient myths” as tools to learn more about what he was experiencing.

“I hope that what I went through on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing may lie for them on the other side of whatever they are fighting through,” he told the publication.
