J.K. Rowling purchases childhood home in UK that inspired parts of Harry Potter series

J.K. Rowling purchased her childhood cottage in Gloucestershire England that slipped into the Harry Potter book series.

Rowling, 54, who lived in the estate between the ages of nine and 18, reportedly bought the home in 2011 for £400,000 (approx. $793,582), the BBC reports.

The property which is known as the Church Cottage in Tutshill is now undergoing renovations. It's no clear at this stage what Rowling intends to do with the home.

Rowling's childhood home lives in many aspects of the Harry Potter world. Her upbringing in the cottage is said to have inspired the cupboard under the stairs that Harry was relegated to in the Dursley household. The vaulted ceilings, and many trap doors also creeped into plenty of Rowling's descriptions of Hogwarts.

In her bedroom window, Rowling reportedly wrote that "Joanne Rowling slept here circa 1982."

Also the fact that the home was located in Tutshill inspired the name of a Quidditch team in the books.

Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 2001, but she didn't have a pen. At the time her and her daughter were living off welfare.

"I couldn't have written this book if I hadn't had a few years where I' d been really as poor as it's possible to go in the UK without being homeless," Rowing told The Wall Street Journal in 2012. "We were on welfare, what we call welfare, I would call benefits, for a couple years."

In 2019, Forbes estimated that Rowling was worth $92 million (approx. $1.45 billion).
