Jim Carrey responds to bizarre rumours about his appearance at recent award show

Jim Carrey has been forced to address bizarre rumours about his recent appearance at an award show.

The comedy icon, 64, largely stays out of the public eye nowadays but emerged for the César Awards held in Paris on February 26, where he received an Honorary César.

But his appearance soon sparked bizarre theories, including that a makeup artist had impersonated him with the help of a mask, which the actor has now been forced to deny.

Carrey's publicist, Marleah Leslie, overnight issued a blunt statement to Rolling Stone and other media outlets, saying, "Jim Carrey attended the Cesar Awards, where he accepted his Honorary Cesar Award".

The head of the awards has also given a statement to entertainment bible Variety to refute wild claims someone had appeared in Carey's place or, even more bizarrely, that he had been cloned.

The Cesar Awards' general delegate Gregory Caulier told Variety rumours about Carrey were a non-issue and praised the actor's dedication to delivering his entire acceptance speech in French.

"Jim Carrey's visit has been planned since this summer," he told Variety.

"From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy's invitation.

"Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.

"He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members.

"His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again, he continued, adding the rumours were "a non-issue".

"I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance."

Comments about Carrey's appearance first popped up on social media sites following the César Awards and soon gathered pace, sparking theories on everything from plastic surgery claims to cloning.

Then what appears to have been a joke by a makeup artist known for morphing into stars added fuel to the fire.

Alexis Stone took to Instagram on March 1, 2026, to post a photo of a prosthetic face mask and false teeth next to the caption, "Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris".

While this was clearly a joke, many took the post to be an admission Carrey was not in Paris until his publicist spoke out overnight.

Carrey was one of the most prolific comedy actors of the 90s and early 2000s, with a string of comedy hits to his name following his breakthrough roles in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask, both of which were released in 1994.

He went on to star in comedy hits including Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty, but also showed his acting prowess in The Truman Show, for which he won a Best Actor award at the Golden Globes, and darker roles in The Cable Guy and Batman Forever.

In 2022, he announced he was retiring from acting, but returned for a voice acting role in the 2024 film Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Carrey has one child, daughter Jane, 38, from his marriage to Melissa Womer. He is also a proud grandfather to her son Jackson, who turned 15 last week.

His second marriage, to actress Lauren Holly, lasted less than a year. He was later engaged to Renée Zellweger and had a long-term relationship with Jenny McCarthy.

He dated Irish makeup artist Cathriona White from 2012 and 2015. After she died of a prescription drug overdose in 2015, her estranged husband sued Carrey for wrongful death, as did her mother, but both lawsuits were later dismissed.

Carrey was accompanied to the César Awards with his girlfriend, who is known only as Min Ah.
