Hugh Jackman begs fans to keep themselves safe from Instagram imposter

Hugh Jackman has taken to social media in a bid to protect fans from an Instagram imposter.

The Wolverine star is currently in the middle of a world tour, covering musical hits from his films such as Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman, and became aware of a ticketing scam after people reached out.

"Thanks so much for making me aware of people using my name and likeness to create fake social media accounts," he wrote in an Instagram statement.

"I understand these people are asking you for money to meet me. Please know this... I have not and will never ask anyone to pay to meet me on social media. Please do not give anyone you do not know your personal information! Please hear me... If someone claiming to be me is asking you for money... it is a SCAM."

Jackman, 50, added that he wanted his fans to "keep yourselves and your family safe".

The Academy Award-nominee has been on his first world tour for the past two-and-a-half months, with The Man, The Music, The Show kicking off with dates in Europe and the UK before his current 22-city leg in America.

The homegrown Hollywood star returns to Australia in August for a string of local dates as well, with stops in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

Jackman ended his Instagram statement with a call to action, asking friends to be cautious but not fearful of social media.

"Social media, when used correctly, can be amazing," he said. "I love that it allows me to share my journey from every part of the world. However, it can also be dangerous."
