Hugh Jackman reflects on 'The Greatest Showman' and why he loves Bondi Beach

Today marks the first day of Hugh Jackman's unemployment.

After retracting his Wolverine claws for the final time in Logan and embarking on a whirlwind press tour for his new movie-musical extravaganza, The Greatest Showman, the 49-year-old is taking a break.

"It's been an amazing year for me. I'm really proud of everything I've done," Jackman told TheFIX at Tuesday night's Greatest Showman Sydney premiere. "But I want to catch up with my mates. I want to just take a little time to reflect, just reassess and see where I head from here."

While he stopped short of dedicating himself to months of binging TV and junk food, he did admit he's "probably a quieter person than you might think".

"I love to read and I like the outdoors," he said. "I like to cook and I like the theatre. I love sport."

And of course, there will be plenty of visits to his beloved Bondi Beach.

"There's nothing like being at home. There's nothing like swimming at Bondi Beach on Christmas morning," he said.

In fact, he's already made at least three trips to the iconic spot since arriving back in Australia this week, including one with his Greatest Showman co-star Zac Efron in tow.

"I took Zac out this morning to train. We went to Bondi Beach," he said. "I told him where to go for dinner. They went to Icebergs. You gotta go to Bondi. You gotta see the view."

"I'm so proud," he continued. "This is my hometown, so I love showing it off to anybody but particularly my friends."

Jackman, who's been married to Deborra-lee Furness for 21 years, is also incredibly proud of circus musical The Greatest Showman, a passion project he fought to get made for seven years.

"[P.T. Barnum] pretty much invented showbiz as we know it today," the father-of-two told TheFIX. "I think of him as a disrupter. I think of him like a Steve Jobs or an Elon Musk. He's someone who just saw the world completely differently to anybody else."

The Greatest Showman is in Australian cinemas on Boxing Day.
