Maddison Inglis won over Aussies' hearts when she revealed the rather humble way she was planning to spend her Australian Open paycheck.

"I love shopping, so I'm sure I'll buy something nice," the tennis star revealed at a press conference after pocketing a cool $480,000 from the tournament.

"I've wanted a Smeg toaster for so long, so I think that's going to be my treat, and maybe the kettle, too."

She's not the only celebrity who's used that first big paycheck to buy a much-wanted appliance – actor Rami Malek reportedly splashed out on a coffee machine with his.

When it comes to the rich and famous, many who have made a name for themselves in the entertainment or sporting worlds have spoken about the exciting moment they got their first big pay day.

"I mean, it could have been over two years. And I always was like, 'I can't wait, someday, someday.'

"One day I bought it, and then I drove it, and then drove it again, and it never drove again."

The actress had accidentally bought "a lemon".

"I didn't know any better to get it checked out, so that was just a nice 25-year-old mistake!"

Aniston's co-star Courteney Cox was so confident in the '90s sitcom's success, she set her sights on buying a Porsche after filming the pilot.

Sex and the City's Kristin Davis revealed on The Late Late Show With James Cordon that Cox had auditioned for Monica and dropped the Porsche details not long afterwards.

"We used to hang out, the rest of us were unemployed waiter-actress types, and one day after class Courteney was like, 'Hey, guys, do you want to come car shopping with me?'" she explained.

"She said 'I did this pilot and I'm feeling really good about it, I think I'm gonna buy a Porsche'.

"We were like, 'Wow, is she for real?' And it was Friends. And it did go really well!"

"My first ambition was to become an ice-cream man, which is why I bought the Bedford van," he told The Daily Mail.

"Not long after I first got it, I pulled into a pub to do a U-turn and there were eight kids with their pocket money out, hoping to buy a 99 or whatever.

"But I had nothing to give them. I've learnt my lesson since then."

"So I always knew, I was like, 'I gotta pay that back'.

"And then one day, when I made enough money, I just paid that whole mortgage off completely."

Similarly, Liam Hemsworth told The Independent his brother Chris paid off their parents' debts.

"[Dad] called my brother Chris back and said: 'I don't know how to feel. Since I left home I have had debts and I thought I'd be paying them off until I died and have this weight hanging over me, and now to have them completely cleared'," the actor said.

"They are so happy now and able to spend more time with us, I would love to be able to do something for my parents like that."
