'I didn't believe it': Aussie star's reaction to getting a message from Taylor's team

G-Flip made national headlines earlier in the year for their cover of Taylor Swift's hit single Cruel Summer.

The Aussie artist – who uses they/them pronouns – shared a series of videos to Instagram at the time, after finding out Swift liked a social media clip of their cover.

But now G-Flip has revealed that the double tap wasn't the only interaction they had with the international superstar.

It turns out that Swift actually had a member of her team reach out to share how much she loved the cover.

"I couldn't believe it. I didn't believe it," G-Flip tells 9honey Celebrity of the moment they received the call. "I was like, 'is this a little cheeky mistake here?' But no, her publicist told me, 'No, Taylor loved it'."

G-Flip, who has shared that they're a big Swift fan themselves, says they never could've expected the cover to blow up and receive the amount of attention that it did.

"I didn't see it coming at all," they said. "I just thought, you know, people would be like 'cute cover G, well done'. I didn't expect to kind of go viral and Taylor liking it...Taylor Swift watched it."

When they first decided to tackle a cover of the mega-hit, G-Flip says they were a bit worried of 'destroying' the song or 'making it worse'.

Thankfully, that's not at all what happened, with fans around the world applauding the artist for their rock rendition of the pop hit.

"I just tried to think of it like, if this was my song, what would I do? So obviously, have a lot of drums, a little bit more on the rock side of genres," they explain.

"But then I was like, 'oh, but I'm a sucker for a rock song that's emotional,' and that song lyrically was very emotional. So that's why I wanted to make a string arrangement to still tie in that emotion."

And when it comes to stepping into the Swiftie fandom, a thought that may be daunting to some, G-Flip says it wasn't something they were particularly worried about.

"I think they're all really lovely," they said. "It was such a warm welcome and they're so lovely and cute. And they were really nice, so nice to me. They say such nice things."
