Elle Macpherson's bizarre health secret: She never leaves home without her urine tester

Some women won't go anywhere without lip balm, face powder and a compact mirror. But that's not nearly enough health and beauty insurance for Elle Macpherson.

When The London Evening Standard asked the 51-year-old supermodel what item she always carries in her handbag, she offered possibly the oddest response ever.

"A pH balance urine tester kit to check that I'm in an alkaline state," she said. "I believe that most ailments come from having an acidic body."

Erm, what? Poor nutrition can be one cause of too much acid in the blood, and it can lead to fatigue and headaches, among other annoying symptoms. However, Elle's body vigilance doesn't end there.

"[I] visit my nutritionist Dr Simone Laubscher on Harley Street and Shirley and Dr Sebagh's clinic for lymphatic drainage," she said of the first stop she makes whenever she's in London.

Her regimen also includes eating three square meals a day, avoiding dairy, red meat and wheat and allowing herself an occasional treat, like "Green & Black's dark chocolate, digestive biscuits and Marmite".

Elle's healthy living tips haven't been completely embraced on social media. One tweeter compared her to "that weird hippy teacher we all had at secondary school".

Yeah, but did any of our former instructors look as amazing as Elle? Clearly she's doing something right.
