'80s music icon Mike Nolan departs band The Fizz in shock announcement

Iconic '80s British pop group The Fizz has announced the shock exit of another band member.

Mike Nolan – one of the three remaining members of the group formerly known as Bucks Fizz – has announced he is leaving the group for "personal reasons."

Nolan, 69, shared the news during an appearance on the Michael Ball Radio 2 show, also sharing the news on social media @thefizzofficial.

"We can confirm, following the Michael Ball show, that Mike will be leaving the group at the end of the year," the group said in a statement.

"Cheryl & Jay will be continuing as 'The Fizz' & a statement from Mike, will follow in the coming days. Thank you for your understanding."

Speaking on radio show, Nolan said his time with the group would come to an end at the end of 2024.

"I'm going to be leaving," he confirmed.

Ball expressed shock at the news during the pop group's interview.

"You're going to be leaving? For real?!" When he asked the reason behind the departure, Nolan said: "Uh… this is personal reasons. It is personal, but… I don't know. I have decided to go, to leave.

"I've been thinking about it for a long, long time, and I just thought, this is the time to do it."

The original pop group consisted of Nolan, Jay Aston, Cheryl Baker and Bobby G. The band won Eurovision in 1981 with their hit song 'Making Up Your Mind.'

They would go on to sell millions of singles and albums throughout the 1980s.

Following Bobby G's departure in 2018 the three remaining members continued to perform.

Nolan has been performing with the group for 43 years and has been with the band since it's inception.

He joked during the radio interview that Aston and Baker would be "glad to see the back of him" although he plans to enjoy his remaining time with the group which will hopefully end with one of the group's iconic Christmas specials.

Aston and Baker said following Nolan's departure they will be joined by other performers, preferably men of a "certain age" to help round out the group on stage. Original member Bobby G will reportedly also join the group for select performances.

Fans of the group were quick to express their sadness at the news, wishing him all the best.

"Very sad that he's leaving but I'm sure we wish him all the best," one fan wrote on X.

"Sad times but thank you for 43 years of music and memories," another said.

One fan commented: "Awwww. I hope everything is ok with you all – iconic people who will always leave such treasured memories with us."

"Sorry to hear this, hope he is alright and looking forward to his retirement," added another.
