Everything you need to know about the 2022 Emmys: Who is nominated, who is hosting and how to watch in Australia

The 74th annual Primetime Emmy Awards is upon us, kicking off on Tuesday, September 13.

The ceremony recognises the best of the best in television, and it's a good excuse for actors and actresses to get all dolled up and mingle with the who's who of television.

From the nominees to the hosts and everything in between, here's everything we know about the 2022 Emmys.

The host 

This year's Emmy Awards will be hosted by Kenan Thompson, so expect a ceremony full of laughs. The 44-year-old actor and comedian is best known for his work on the popular variety program, Saturday Night Live, for which he has been nominated six times for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Thompson won an Emmy in 2018 for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for his work on SNL.

Unlike the Oscars earlier this year, which was marred with controversy thanks to the Will Smith slap, Thompson says the Emmys will be conflict-free.

"It kind of just threw the entire world off guard, basically, and that won't happen again," Thompson told The Hollywood Reporter last week in the lead-up to the event. "Even if I am roasting [someone], it shouldn't come across as any sort of malice."

How to watch the 2022 Emmy Awards in Australia 

The 2022 Emmy Awards takes place on Tuesday, September 13 at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown LA.

You can watch the ceremony live from 10am on Fox Arena on Foxtel Now and Foxtel Go or stream it on Binge. But if you're after a red-carpet fix, tune in on E! Live from the Red Carpet two hours ahead of the ceremony.

The nominees

Leading the way for nominees is the hit HBO series Succession, which is nominated for a whopping 25 awards, including the big award of the night: Outstanding Drama Series.

Succession received a total of 14 Emmy nominations across acting categories, breaking The West Wing's record of 12 for the most acting Emmy nods for a drama series in a single year.

The HBO series also broke the record for most acting nominations for any series in a single year – a title previously held by Roots with 13 noms.

Hot on its heels are Apple TV's hit Ted Lasso and HBO's The White Lotus, which both raked up 20 nominations each. 

Aussie stars have been recognised at this Emmys, with Succession actress Sarah Snook – who is from Adelaide – nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. 

Toni Collette also got a nod for her work on The Staircase, while Perth's Murray Bartlett was nominated for his role in The White Lotus.

Another shows that have multiple nominations are Only Murders in the Building with 17, Euphoria with 16, Squid Games with 14 and Ozark with 13.

However, there were also some big snubs, such as Selena Gomez for her role on Only Murders in the Building, and Jennifer Aniston also surprisingly failed to impress with her performance in The Morning Show.
