Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski scores Emmy Award nomination for The Handmaid's Tale as The Crown leads with 24 nods

Australian actress Yvonne Strahovski will fly the flag for the Aussies at the 73rd Emmy Awards after scoring a nod for her role in The Handmaid's Tale.

The pregnant starlet will go up against co-stars Samira Wiley and Ann Dowd as well as The Crown's Gillian Anderson, Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category.

The Crown scored an impressive 24 nominations, including nine actor nominations. Josh O'Connor, Emma Corrin, Tobias Menzies and Olivia Colman were all recognised, along with Claire Foy, who played the Queen in Season 1 and 2 but reappeared in a flashback scene in Season 4.

Disney Plus' The Mandalorian tied with the royal drama for the most nominations, followed by WandaVision (23), The Handmaid's Tale (21), Saturday Night Live (21), Ted Lasso (20), Lovecraft Country (18), The Queen's Gambit (18), and Mare of Easttown (16).

Bridgerton scored a number of nominations for its first season, including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor in a Drama Series for breakout star Regé-Jean Page. Lady Whistledown herself, Julie Andrews, also scored a nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.

But Nicole Kidman missed out on a Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie nod this year for her role in The Undoing.

The actress looked set to score a nomination for her role in the HBO mini-series but was overlooked in favour of Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's Gambit), Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision), Cynthia Erivo (Genius: Aretha) and Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You).

However, Kidman's co-star Hugh Grant scored a nod in the Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category, going up against Paul Bettany (WandaVision), Ewan McGregor (Halston), as well as Hamilton stars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr.

In other categories, Framing Britney Spears was nominated in the Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Special category.

Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A CBS Primetime Special received an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series Or Special category. It will go up against the latest season of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy, United Shades Of America With W. Kamau Bell and Vice.

Friends: The Reunion scored a nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), meaning Courteney Cox, who served as an executive producer alongside the other cast and the show's creators, has finally received an Emmy nomination for the show — almost two decades after it ended.

Cox was the only star of the ensemble cast who was never recognised by the Television Academy during the show's decade-long run, which nabbed a total of 62 total Emmy nominations over that time.

Director Ben Winston was also recognised in the Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special category.

Dolly Parton's Christmas On The Square scored a nod for Outstanding Television Movie and Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special was nominated in the Outstanding Contemporary Makeup For A Variety, Nonfiction Or Reality Program (Non-Prosthetic) category.

Father and daughter actors Ron Cephas Jones of This Is Us and Jasmine Cephas Jones of Blindspotting announced this year's nominees on the Emmy Awards website.

Qualifying shows must have aired between June 1, 2020, and May 31, 2021.

Cedric the Entertainer was recently announced as host of the ceremony, which will take place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on September 19.

Unlike last year's Zoom-based awards ceremony, there will be a live but limited audience this year, made up of the nominees and their guests.

The 73rd Emmy Awards will air on CBS in the US and will be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.
