A '90s movie star claims he has been 'fired' from Emily in Paris

Rupert Everett, the British actor who hit the big time with the hit '90s movie My Best Friend's Wedding, claims he was fired from Emily in Paris.

Everett, was cast in the fourth season of the hit Netflix series, playing Italian fashion designer Giorgio Barbieri.

"For me, it was a tragedy. I was in bed for two weeks because I couldn't get over it," he told Vanity Fair.

"I did a scene in the latest season, and they told me, 'Next year we'll speak,'" continued Everett.

"I waited for them to call me – but ultimately, it never came, and they just fired me. Show business is always very difficult, from the beginning to the end. When they write the screenplay, they think they want you –– but then things change, and they lose your character. I don't know why."

A source has since told Deadline Everett was only cast as a guest star and his role was never meant to be ongoing.

Regardless, Everett accepts experiences are part of the the business of being an actor.

Everett built up an impressive resume in the UK and the US before being cast in My Best Friend's Wedding alongside Julia Roberts. The 1997 movie was a major hit and gave his career a significant boost.

The movie scene he became most famous for was when he sang the Aretha Franklin hit song I Say A Little Prayer at a rehearsal dinner. Jules, played by Julia Roberts, was pretending her gay best friend George, played by Everett, was her boyfriend.

To get back at her for roping him into the subterfuge, he leads the group in the singalong.

Following the rom-com, Everett next starred in An Ideal Husband alongside Julianne Moore.

He voiced Prince Charming in the animated films Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and played John Lamont/Mr Barron in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in 2016.

Everett is also the author of fiction and non-fiction books including two novels called Hello, Darling, Are You Working? and The Hairdressers of St. Tropez, two memoirs called Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins and Vanished Years and the non-fiction book To the End of the World: Travels with Oscar Wilde.

Season five of Emily in Paris has been confirmed and is currently in production. It is expected to be released later this year on Netflix.

The new season will follow Emily's adventures in Italy and her relationship with new love interest Marcello Muratori, played by Italian actor Eugenio Franceschini.
