Elvis Presley's ex-girlfriend Linda Thompson returns to Graceland after 47 years

Elvis Presley's ex-girlfriend Linda Thompson has returned to her former home, Graceland.

The Miss Tennessee star took to Instagram to share her emotional experience visiting 'The King's Memphis mansion.

Thompson, 74, dated Presley from 1972-1976 and lived in the iconic home that is now open to visitors.

As part of the Elvis Week festivities, Thompson stopped by the estate and wrote a heartfelt message about her experience.

"Guess where I am? Back in my former home, Graceland, to share memories of the king of rock & roll & many hearts… including mine," her Instagram caption began.

"I am honoured to be a guest of EPE and Graceland, and to have the opportunity to meet so many wonderful fans from around the world who are devoted to Elvis's incomparable legacy."

In the caption, she revealed she had stained glass peacocks designed and made to separate the living room from the music room in Presley's iconic home.

"The famous jungle room that Elvis and I decorated together… And his beautiful Maltese cross that I designed and had made for Elvis - his 1973 Christmas gift from me," she wrote about specific photos.

"And finally a couple of throwback photos. The memories I have from living in this home with Elvis for 4 1/2 years are deeply carved into my being."

"Those years helped to shape me into the woman I have become. I continue to be grateful for the rarified privilege of having so intimately known such an astounding human soul!" the post concluded.

Thompson met Presley in 1972, just after he separated from his ex-wife, Priscilla Presley. The pair were smitten, and their relationship developed into a four-year romance.

Just months after meeting, Thompson moved into the Graceland estate and added her own design touch throughout the years.

Graceland's official website shared details of Thompson's stained glass installation: "The stained-glass peacock panels between the Living Room and Music Room, as well as the stained glass around the front door and the stained-glass fixtures over the pool table in the basement were added to Graceland in October 1974.

"The work was done for Elvis by Laukhuff Stained Glass Company of Memphis for the cost of $9,345 (AU$14,102)."

Presley and Thompson parted ways in December 1976 when the model decided to break up.

They remained good friends until the singer and actor passed away at the age of 42 the following year, in 1977.
