David and Victoria Beckham deny split rumours: 'Bizarre and embarrassing'

David and Victoria Beckham have hit back at speculation that they are headed towards a divorce.

A spokesperson for the couple, who share four children, told the British newspaper The Sun on Friday: "There is no statement due or divorce. This is just fake social media news. This is all very bizarre and an embarrassing waste of time."

The football legend, 43, and the fashion designer, 44, sparked a firestorm on social media late Friday following a rumour that he cheated on the former Spice Girl with their six-year-old daughter Harper's teacher, and that the woman was now pregnant with his child. Among the speculation was that the teacher had since been fired from Harper's school.

The Twitterverse ran wild with theories, including that a split announcement from the couple was imminent.

A tweet picking up traction by British broadcaster and journalist Jonny Gould read, "David and Victoria Beckham will be trending later."

Added Twitter user Josh Moutray: "Such sad news to hear David & Victoria Beckham are getting divorced. Apparently press release tomorrow to confirm. Think this has been on the card for the last two years #SadTimes #Beckhams"

While others were gobsmacked by the allegations.

"David Beckham cheated on Victoria Beckham?! Excuse me?!" wrote one fan.

Added another: "How does one cheat on Victoria Beckham??????"

While it appears the rumours have been snuffed out (for now), David and Victoria have been forced to spend some time apart in recent years. While Victoria continues to grow her eponymous fashion brand in the UK, David is set to move to America as he prepares to launch a Major League Soccer team in Florida.

But the distance has been something the couple has learned to manage, Victoria told Elle last year.

"David and I both respect that each of us are very, very busy; we are both running big businesses, but we do put the phones down, and sometimes we just talk."

The split rumours come as David and Victoria, who tied the knot in 1999, are set to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary on July 4.

Posh even sent a sweet message to her husband on Instagram in the midst of the alleged drama. On June 8, the style mogul shared a photo of herself hugging Harper to Instagram, captioning the snap: "Morning cuddles x So much love. We love and miss u @davidbeckham"

Victoria and David also share sons Cruz, 13, Romeo, 15, and Brooklyn, 19.
