'Fracturing the family': Russell Crowe's ex Danielle Spencer takes blame for marriage breakdown

Danielle Spencer has spoken out about her split from Russell Crowe, admitting that she was at fault for it.

In an appearance on Stellar's podcast Something To Talk About, the actress and singer, 56, said of her 61-year-old ex-husband, "It's really sad breaking up with somebody that you've known for so long, that you've had children with."

"Me kind of breaking up the family – and it felt very much like I was driving that – so I had to deal with my almost sense of guilt that I was fracturing the family, but obviously I did it for a number of reasons, and I wouldn't have done it if I didn't think it needed to happen."

The ex-couple – who wed in 2003, split in 2012, and officially divorced in 2018 – are now on friendly terms, co-parenting their sons Charlie, 22, and Tennyson, 19.

Spencer admitted that despite their famously solid relationship even after the split, "There were days and moments where obviously things were not fine, were tense, we were unhappy and it's sad."

Though they may not reunite in a romantic sense, they will be doing so on stage very soon.

Spencer will be the opening act for Crowe's band Indoor Garden Party, which will be playing a one-night-only show in Enmore Theatre in Newtown on December 20.

Crowe spoke about the collaboration on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, telling the hosts, "My former paramour, my ex-wife, Danielle Spencer, she's opening the show for us."

Kyle Sandilands then commented, "Isn't it nice when you can get an ex to also show up and it doesn't cause any trouble with the current missus? Everyone's happy. She's the mother of your child."

Crowe responded, "Yeah everybody's cool. The coolest about that is my kids. They're like, 'Dad, that's really excellent'."

The former couple are currently seeing other people.

Spencer has been in a relationship with author Adam Long since 2016, while Crowe is in a relationship with his personal assistant, former actress Britney Theriot since 2020.

Crowe and Theriot reportedly first met on the set of the film Broken City in 2013, as castmates.

They've been an item since 2020, but largely stay out the spotlight, aside from the odd red carpet appearance.

Spencer has a new album set to release this year, while Crowe's upcoming film Nuremburg is already generating Oscars buzz.
