Cher has restyled the famous Golden Girls theme, adding her own spin to the classic song for an upcoming NBC special in celebration of Betty White's life.

The TV network will air Celebrating Betty White: America's Golden Girl this Tuesday (Monday US), and Cher has shared a sneak peek on what viewers can expect.

Posting to her Instagram, the Believe singer shared a video of her rendition of 'Thank you for Being a Friend', which was filmed and performed on the original Golden Girls Stage 5 in Hollywood. Watch the clip above.

The version most Golden Girls fans will know is the cover by Cynthia Fee, which was used by the show as their opening credits theme from 1985 to 1992. The song was originally written and recorded in 1978 by Andrew Gold.

With the star just recently passed on December 31, and now officially 100-years-old — her birthday falling on January 17 — NBC's tribute is set to be a major display of appreciation for her career, good humour and generosity.

The special will see tributes not only from Cher, but also from a list of other stars and high-profile figures, including President Joe Biden, Drew Barrymore, Ellen DeGeneres, Tina Fey, Goldie Hawn and more.

"Betty White brought a smile to the lips of generations of Americans. She's a cultural icon who will be sorely missed. Jill and I are thinking of her family and all those who loved her this New Year's Eve," wrote President Joe Biden.

Talk show host Ellen Degeneres also paid tribute, calling White "exceptional".

Particularly touching words came from actress Sandra Bullock, who wrote that she would be buying "rose-coloured glasses" upon White's death.

"I don't drink vodka…but I will tonight, on ice, with a slice of lemon with a hot dog on the other side and just be okay being sad," Bullock wrote.

"I'll have to buy some rose-coloured glasses because Betty was that for all of us."
