Britney Spears' dad Jamie reportedly received $56,000 loan days before putting singer under conservatorship

A new report claims Britney Spears' dad Jamie Spears took out a loan just days after putting the singer under conservatorship back in 2008.

According to The New York Times, an apparent cash-strapped Jamie received a US$40,000 (approx. $56,000) loan from Tri Star Sports & Entertainment Group, the firm of Britney's then-business manager Lou Taylor — all while Britney was hospitalised and involuntarily placed on psychiatric hold.

The outlet also claimed that while Britney was still in hospital, Jamie, now 69, filed a petition in a California court to place his daughter under conservatorship and thus take control of her finances and estate. He reportedly argued he should be paid to help her as she was struggling with her mental health. Jamie's petition was approved and in 2009 he employed Tri Star to manage Britney's estate.

It remains unknown what Jamie did with the $56,000 loan but the report questions if he financially benefitted from his daughter's conservatorship.

"It makes me wonder where the allegiance lies," National Guardianship Association president Anthony Palmieri told the NYT. "Is the conservator making decisions in the best interest of the conservatee or the business manager who they owe a debt to? It reeks of conflict of interest."

Lou Taylor's lawyer, Charles Harder, has since told the NYT in a statement that Jamie eventually "repaid" the "small loan," which the attorney insisted "had no affect on Tri Star's work for the estate in later years".

However, the outlet reports that Jamie received an estimated US$6 million (approx. $8.4 million) during his 13-year run as conservator, while Tri Star reportedly received five per cent of Britney's gross entertainment revenue.

In early November, a judge terminated Britney's conservatorship two months after she gave a powerful testimony, in which she expressed her desire to sue her family for putting her through 13 years of abuse.
