They were once part television’s most beloved friendship group, but no one expected Big Bang Theory stars Simon Helberg and Jim Parsons to reunite this week for a photo that sent fans into a tailspin.

Helberg, who played Howard Wolowitz, shared a snap of himself cosied up to Parsons, best known for his turn as Dr Sheldon Cooper, under a bright blue sky.

“How has it been 20 years since I met this gem of a human??” he captioned the snap on Instagram, prompting a massive reaction from Big Bang Theory fans.

They only got more excited when other stars from the beloved sitcom started commenting.

“My bros,” wrote Kunal Nayyar, who played Raj Koothrappali.

“Love this and you both so much!” chimed in Melissa Rauch, who played Helberg’s on-screen wife Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz.

Brian Thomas Smith, who played side character Zack Johnson, added: “Holy Moly!! Are you trying to break the internet?”

It’s been more than seven years since the Big Bang Theory ended and the actors parted ways, but that’s not the only reason fans were so thrilled to see Parsons and Helberg reunite.

Just last month, Helberg confessed he had struggled to stay in contact with his former co-stars on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast.

“It’s been a while since I’ve honestly talked to anybody,” he said.

Though he tries to text his old cast mates and arrange catch-ups when they’re in the same city, it’s easier said than done when everyone is travelling for acting jobs and many have family responsibilities.

The last time the core cast were all together in the same room was actually back in 2019, when they appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after filming for Big Bang Theory’s final season wrapped.

Despite the time and distance, Helberg clearly has nothing but love for the cast.

“I think that when you’ve got a really great ensemble sometimes, there’s a magical element to it,” he said on the podcast.

Sadly, there were some downsides to being on one of the biggest sitcoms of all time.

Parsons recently opened up about how “miserable” he was at the height of the show’s popularity.

“I look back now and realise that there were many ways, at some of the best moments of my life, I was miserable,” Parsons said during an appearance on All Out with Jon Dean in July.

“I was not happy. I was stressed.”

These days he’s living his best life on stage, having pivoted to theatre work after Big Bang Theory ended, and enjoying some well-earned downtime with art director husband Todd Spiewak.
